West Virginia Leads Nation in Efforts

 to Commemorate National Problem

Gambling Awareness Week

National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, held this year March 9-16, is always an opportunity to bring attention to those affected by problem gambling and highlight the help that is available. West Virginia is always a leader in efforts to publicize awareness of problem gambling during this week.     This year, over 50 events were held statewide by the Problem Gamblers Help Network of West Virginia staff and counselors as well as many local businesses.    Several state newspapers published articles on problem gambling, and hundreds of posters and brochures were distributed and displayed statewide.   Commissioners for Kanawha County, which has accounted for almost 1/6 of all 1-800-GAMBLER calls, issued an official proclamation recognizing the week. Many network counselors gave speeches to local civic and professional groups or college classes. For a full list of WV NPGAW activities, go to www.npgaw.org/.
